Students in the News
  • Juan H. earned more that 800 points in the Accelerated Reader Program.
  • Wesley B. and Brittany S. were selected to participate in the Baton Rouge Junior’s Choir program. 
  • We had schoolwide participation in the PTA Cultural Arts Competition.  Students competed in Visual Arts, Literature and Photography categories.
  • Carter S., our Student of the Year, was named as the East Baton Rouge Parish Elementary Student of the Year.  In addition, he was a regional finalist.
  • Thirty-two of our students participated in a Recorder Ensemble.
  • Talent Show Grand Prize winners were Catherine H., Hannah B., Alison A. and Makaley H..  The Talent Show is an annual event.
  • Anna C., Kayla C. and Jasmine H.represented Shenandoah Elementary at the Second Annual Honors Music Camp.
  • Fourteen fifth graders were selected as winners of the National 2005 Creative Communication Essay Contest.

Special Student Activities and Incentives

  • We again recognized fifth grade students for earning the President’s Education Award.  Nine of our students were recipients of this scholastic honor this school year.
  • We hosted our third Academic Olympics to allow students to compete in the areas of language arts, math, science and social studies.
  • Students continued their participation in Campfire and Junior Achievement activities through instructional programs.
  • The Cajun Village came alive as an outdoor Social Studies workshop depicting life in an early Acadian setting.  This annual effort involved Kindergarten and Third Grade students.
  • The Accelerated Reader Program continued to be an important part of individualized reading skill development.
  • Honor Roll recognition was given each nine weeks period to applaud academic and behavioral achievements.
  • Our Kindergarten children  sold fruits, vegetables, and flowers from their garden.  This was their  twelfth year  to market their products through the Kinder Vender program.
  • This was our fifth year for our 5th grade students to participate in the Eagles Pride Bank and Trust Savings Program sponsored by Citizens Bank.
  • The PTA sponsored Recess Treat Day festivities during the year.
  • The PTA sponsored School wide Skating Events throughout the school year.

Staff Recognition

  • Amy Butler served on a committee to select the new elementary Math program for our parish school system.
  • Kathrin Mundinger was awarded a grant from a professional society to purchase a CD player for her classroom.
  • Cindy Wall served as our Teacher of the Year.
  • Kimberly Brewington worked on meeting requirements related to National Board Certification.
  • Kathrin Mundinger, Lauren Bunch, Aimee LaValley and Anne Creighton participated in an eight week program designed to improve writing skills of our students.
  • Andrea Moore participated in a Language/Professional Development Course.
  • Brandie Tuttle and Kathrin Mundinger participated in a parish program to advance literacy efforts.
  • Beverly Hymel and Franchesca Williams participated in regional training sessions to promote phoneme sequencing.
  • Kathrin Mundinger was awarded a grant from the Academic Distinction Fund to support math instruction.
  • Kim DiPalma was awarded a grant from the Academic Distinction Fund to support reading efforts.
  • Kathrin Mundinger participated with teachers from other parish schools to promote stronger mathematics instruction.
  • Kim DiPalma and Nicole Montgomery served as mentors to new teachers in our parish.

Parental/Community Involvement

  • For the third year, local attorneys from the Kean Miller Law Firm gave every third grader a new dictionary for home reference use.
  • Efforts of the PTA purchased a ProActive Board and a color laser jet printer for our school.  Parent Dwight Pousson spearheaded the effort.  In addition, Mr. Pousson donated many hours and his expertise to schoolwide technology efforts.
  • A portable computer lab with 30 laptop computers was placed on our campus.
  • Special Invitation Lunch Days were held.
  • The SHARE Reading Program was continued and encouraged family reading activities and reading for pleasure.
  • Joni Brignac was named as our Volunteer of the Year and was recognized by Volunteers in Public Schools.
  • Sponsors and adopters continued to support our school through service and funding allocations.  Citizens Bank and Trust, the Darnell Browning State Farm Insurance Agency, Delmont Pastries and Subway provided sponsorship.
  • Our PTA continued to provide a high level of involvement and support of the instructional and learning aspects of our school.
  • Kindergarten parents put in hours and energy repairing environmental areas and tilling garden beds in the La Petit Village area.
  • The PTA purchased a new television for our auditorium to be used during inside recesses and grade level collaborative lessons.

Charitable Contributions

  • Our support was extensive as we collected items for the Food Drive effort that was held on behalf of the Baton Rouge Food Bank.
  • The tradition of contributing funds to St. Jude Hospital, in lieu of exchanging Christmas gifts, was again honored.  This was our fifteenth year of participation.  Our donation was $2017.34.
  • The Eighth Annual Footsteps for Friends effort raised $1649.46 in donations for the Candlelighters group of the Baton Rouge Cancer Services.
  • For the third consecutive year, we participated in Jump Rope for Heart.  We earned $3114.61 for the worthy cause.
  • We collected new, originally packaged toys for the Toys for Tots Campaign at Christmas.  This was our fifth year of participation in this effort.
  • We collected aluminum tabs off soda cans to profit the Ronald McDonald House in Memphis, Tennessee.
