About Our School



Highlights from the 2005-2006 School Year

Our focus is to offer a child-centered environment for our kindergarten through fifth grade students.  The instructional program is inclusive of academic, social, and emotional growth and development efforts.  We are happy to highlight several of the exciting and memorable events from our 2005-2006 school session.  The following listings provide a positive reflection of our recent past.  In addition, they serve as a strong foundation for continued progressive learning opportunities. You are invited to visit and work in our school.  When we unite to put “Children First”, our directions and efforts will bring success.  We appreciate your support.

Students in the News

  • Max Saltz was selected to serve as a delegate in the People to People Student Ambassador Program.
  • Miranda Murray, Lauren Looney, Erica Frith and I’Riel Smith were selected to participate in the Baton Rouge Junior’s Choir program. 
  • Logan Hymel was a member of the Children’s Chorus.
  • We had schoolwide participation in the PTA Cultural Arts Competition.  Students competed in Visual Arts and Literature categories.  Five students received honors at the district level and one placed first at the state level. 
  • Bryce Rushing, our Student of the Year, was named as the First Runner-up in the East Baton Rouge
    Parish Elementary Student of the Year competition.
  • Talent Show First Place winners were Makenzey Heughan, Madisen Hadley, Gabrielle Konow, Daniel Wilborn and Sarah Lolier.  The Talent Show is an annual event.
  • Aaron Felix, Jaylon Morris, Vaughn Johnson, and Jocelyn Forseman represented Shenandoah Elementary at the Third Annual Honors Music Camp.
  • The Greater Baton Rouge Association of Realtors recognized Jacolby Lang, Monterrio Matthews, Paige Day, and Evan Tullos as Blue Ribbon Award Winners.

Special Student Activities and Incentives

  • We again recognized fifth grade students for earning the President’s Education Award.  Eight of our students were recipients of this scholastic honor this school year.
  • We hosted our fourth Academic Olympics to allow students to compete in the areas of language arts, math, science and social studies.
  • The Cajun Village came alive as an outdoor Social Studies workshop depicting life in an early Acadian setting.  This annual effort involved Kindergarten and Third Grade students.
  • The Accelerated Reader Program continued to be an important part of individualized reading skill development.
  • Honor Roll recognition was given each nine weeks period to applaud academic and behavioral achievements.  
  • The PTA arranged for a Ballet for Children presentation to be held on our campus.
  • Our Kindergarten children again sold fruits, vegetables, and flowers from their garden.  This was their thirteenth year to market their products through the Kinder Vender program.
  • This was our sixth year for our 5th grade students to participate in the Eagles Pride Bank and Trust Savings Program sponsored by Citizens Bank.
  • The PTA sponsored Holiday Treats during the year.
  • The PTA sponsored Schoolwide Skating Events throughout the school year.
  • We implemented the Instructional Mastery Club program via the school website.
  • Jeremy Lockett, Renee Lucas, Cole LeBlanc and Lauren O’Neal submitted winning entries to the Capital Area Reading Council’s Young Authors Contest.

Staff Recognition

  • Our school qualified for Title 1 Funding.  We focused on Early Literacy.  Kim DiPalma served as the key teacher for that program.
  • Toni Teepell served as our Teacher of the Year.
  • Aimee Lanning was nominated for the Disney Teacher Awards Program.
  • Gretchen Graphia was selected as the Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market Teacher of the Year for our area.
  • Kimberly Brewington worked on meeting requirements related to National Board Certification.
  • Lauren Bunch served as our Arts Liaison in a parish effort to promote arts programs in local schools.
  • K-3 Teachers attended a Summer Reading Institute Program to prepare for the 2006-2007 Reading Initiative.
  • Amy Butler served as a presenter at the Louisiana Association of Math Educators Convention.
  • Kathrin Mundinger implemented a grant from the Academic Distinction Fund to support math instruction.
  • Kim DiPalma implemented a grant from the Academic Distinction Fund to support reading efforts.
  • Kim DiPalma, Nicole Montgomery, and Dana Kelly served as mentors to new teachers in our parish.

Parental/Community Involvement

  • The Southeast Dairy Association awarded Shenandoah Elementary a $5000.00 grant to use with fourth and fifth grade students.
  • For the fourth year, local attorneys from the Kean Miller Law Firm gave every third grader a new dictionary for home reference use.
  • A portable computer lab with 30 laptop computers was placed on our campus.
  • Special Invitation Lunch Days were held.
  • The SHARE Reading Program was continued and encouraged family reading activities and reading for pleasure.
  • Belinda Turner was named as our Volunteer of the Year and was recognized by Volunteers in Public Schools.
  • Sponsors and adopters continued to support our school through service and funding allocations. 
  • Citizens Bank and Trust, the Darnell Browning State Farm Insurance Agency, and Subway provided sponsorship.
  • Our PTA continued to provide a high level of involvement and support of the instructional and learning aspects of our school.
  • Eagle Grove was maintained and enhanced by Shenandoah staff, students, and parents.  The area offers an environment that is available for quiet activities. 
  • Kindergarten parents put in hours and energy repairing environmental areas and tilling garden beds in the La Petit Village area.
  • ExxonMobil provided $1000.00 in gift funds to help support our instructional programs.  Those donations are based on company employees who donate time and service to schools.
  • PTA funds supported the cost of new computer tables, chairs, and paint to refurbish our computer lab.  The school system provided twenty (20) new computers to place in the lab.
  • The Louisiana State Department of Education awarded us $8,584.75 in response to our school performance scores.  We purchased eight (8) network printers.  School system funds provided three (3) additional network printers.

Charitable Contributions

  • Our support was extensive as we collected items for new Baton Rouge families who were affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.  Items and funds supported the instructional needs of Shenandoah students and other evacuees throughout the parish.
  • The tradition of contributing funds to St. Jude Hospital, in lieu of exchanging Christmas gifts, was again honored.  This was our sixteenth year of participation.  Our donation was $2209.38.
  • The Ninth Annual Footsteps for Friends effort raised $1394.90 in donations for the Candlelighters group of the Baton Rouge Cancer Services.
  • For the Fourth consecutive year, we participated in Jump Rope for Heart.  We earned $2260.49 for the worthy cause.
  • We collected new, originally packaged toys for the Toys for Tots Campaign at Christmas.  This was our sixth year of participation in this effort.
  • We continued our efforts to collect aluminum tabs off soda cans to profit the Ronald McDonald House in Memphis, Tennessee.
