Projects and Long-term Assignments

Check out Renzulli Learning at renzullilearning.com or at the link available in my resource center!  It has thousands of activities for all types of learners.  Your child probably has a password already!  You can access this child friendly website from home and incorporate what your child is learning in the classroom, with activites they are involved in at home!  Please check out this fabulous site.

English-Language Arts-

Various writing projects will be assigned throughout the year.  Those genres will include narrative, demonstrative, persuasive and expository.  Please look for those assignments and due dates as they are posted.

Adjective Snowmen:  Students will create adjective snowmen using articles, and common and proper adjectives.  

Reading-

A Scrapbook Page: Students must read a non-fiction book of their choice and create a scrapbook page illustrating what was read and learned using that resource. (This project is due November 4, 2009)

Book Jacket:  What really attracts you to a book? The cover!  Students will read a book of their choice and create a new book jacket which includes the front and rear covers, as well as the front and rear inside flaps.  (This project due )

Book Advertisement:  The students will read a mystery and must make a poster to advertise their book.  The poster should make someone else very interested in reading that book!  (This project due)

ABC Book For You!:  The students will create ABC books for PreK students to use as learning tools.  The students will create a book using all of the letters of the alphabet, one on each page.  The letter and all writing mus be either stenciled or done using stickers since the early learners who are receiving their books are just learning their alphabet.  Each letter must be illustrated using a picture that begins with that letter.  A word must be below each picture to support early literacy.  Remember that all writing must be done using a stencil or stickers. (This project due)

Book Mobile:  The students will read a fantasy book of their choice and create a hanging mobile to be presented and displayed in the classroom. Please look for that project criteria to come home with students. Check the homepage for details of delivery. (This project due in March)

Social Studies-

Lousiana's Symbols Project: The students will create four new symbols representing Louisiana.  Using poster paper or board, students will draw pictures of the symbols, write one sentence for each symbol explaining why they think it represents Louisiana, and should be ready to present their projects to the class. (This project is due November 14, 2009)

Valentine's Day:  The students will research the history of St. Valentine's Day and will write a short, one page essay of their findings. The students will create a Valentine box, using decorations of their choice, to collect and store Valentine's cards being passed out to the class in February.  Students are asked to bring cards and candy that day to pass out to their 26 classmates. (This project due in early Ferbruary)

Time Line:  The students will create a timeline of their life starting with their birth date and ending with this project's due date. This project will be completely done in class, except for the collection of dates and information from family and friends.  Only 1 birthday will be accepted in the timeline of your life. (This project due)

Science-

Solar System Project: Students will create a report and poster on an assigned planet.  The criteria was sent home along with a rubric.  Students should be ready to present their poster and project that day to the class. (This project due)

Moon Phase Project:

Weather Data Collection Project: Students will collect specific weather data for a city in a state of their choice, excluding Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Students will place the data appropriately in their self-created data table.  Projects must exhibit an understanding of data tables and relay two weeks worth of weather data. (This project due)

Rock Cycle Project: Students will illustrate the Rock Cycle any way they would like on paper ranging from legal sized to poster board.  The cycle must show how rock can change from one form to another, and each process must be labeled, defined and described for clarity.  Projects must be neat and may not be handwritten as that much information could affect the look and feel of the project. (This project due )

Mathematics

Numbers And Their Uses Collections:

Large Numbers Collection: Students are to collect large numbers (in the ten-thousands place and above) and write the large number in standard form on the project sheet they were given. They are then to write where they found the number. Numbers must be real and not made up. For example: Earth is 93,000,000 miles away from the Sun. I found this information in an encyclopedia. (This project is due January)

  • Find an Online Math Game For Us: Students are to use the Internet to find a kind-safe and user friendly online math game that all can play! Game sites must be accessible and kid-friendly when visiting. Please try sites with as few pop-ups as possible. (This project due late February 2010)
